This achievement recognizes her extensive career devoted to supporting survivors and driving systemic change to combat family violence.

Recipients of this award are chosen based on their history of increasing safety for victims and survivors of domestic violence, enhancing the accountability of batterers, and making systemic changes to laws in Georgia – all to eliminate gender inequality.

Daniel has been a leading figure in the fight against family violence, serving with distinction on the Commission on Family Violence. Her career as an attorney and current Deputy Director at Georgia Legal Services Program is marked by a deep commitment to supporting survivors. She has represented them in courts across the Middle Georgia region for over twenty years. Her legal expertise and advocacy have made significant strides in enhancing the safety and rights of those affected by family violence.

Among her notable contributions is the creation of a dating violence project at the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) in Macon. This initiative, designed to help teenagers recognize and prevent family violence, has been instrumental in educating young people and fostering a safer community.

Daniel’s influence extends beyond her legal work. She has played a crucial role in several family violence task forces, contributing to the development of effective policies and processes aimed at combating family violence. Her efforts have helped shape a more coordinated and comprehensive response to this critical issue.

A statewide and nationally renowned trainer, Tomieka has shared her expertise with judges, lawyers, and law enforcement professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to address family violence effectively. Her training sessions have been pivotal in advancing the understanding and response to family violence across various sectors.

“Tomieka Daniel’s exceptional contributions to the judicial system truly demonstrate the core values of the Gender Justice Award,” said Judge Paige Whitaker, Chair of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence. “Her dedication has empowered countless survivors and served as an example to others in the legal profession.
