There are hundreds of murder-suicides in the U.S. every year, claiming the lives of at least 1,500 people annually. In this presentation, which is based on Dr. Joiner's 2014 book The Perversion of Virtue, he will argue that nearly all of these deaths begin with the perpetrator's decision to die by suicide, then grow through a perversion of virtue into the belief that one's death requires the death of at least one other person. The virtues perverted in these incidents are always or almost always one or more of these four: mercy, justice, glory, or duty. We will discuss the implications for understanding and intervening in these incidents, including the basic one that if murder-suicide arises out of suicide, suicide prevention will also prevent murder-suicide.
