JEKYLL ISLAND, GA – The Georgia Commission on Family Violence (GCFV) is proud to announce Freddy Hernández, CEO and Founder of HispAtlanta, as the recipient of the 2025 Responsible Coverage Award. The award will be presented at the 31st GCFV Statewide Conference in Jekyll Island, Georgia, recognizing Freddy’s outstanding work in uplifting the voices of survivors and raising awareness around domestic violence through ethical and impactful reporting.

A communication professional and Emmy-nominated journalist, Freddy Hernández has become a leading voice in Georgia’s Hispanic media landscape. As founder and lead reporter of HispAtlanta, an independent digital media outlet, Freddy has created a trusted platform dedicated to informing, educating, and empowering the Hispanic community across Georgia.

“Freddy Hernández represents the power of media used responsibly and compassionately,” said GCFV Chair Judge Paige Whitaker. “His work with HispAtlanta has opened critical channels of communication for Spanish-speaking survivors of domestic violence. By reporting with empathy, accuracy, and purpose, Freddy is helping to break down barriers to safety and justice for marginalized communities throughout our state.”

Since its founding, HispAtlanta has connected thousands of Spanish-speaking residents with resources on legal rights, nonprofit services, domestic violence assistance, and access to education and entrepreneurship. The platform has received seven consecutive Southeast Emmy Award nominations. It has been recognized by the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia House of Representatives, and Latin American consulates for its service and advocacy.

In accepting the award, Freddy shared:

“This recognition is deeply meaningful to me, as it represents a validation of our mission at HispAtlanta: to give a voice to those who often go unheard, especially victims of domestic violence.
Receiving this award is not just a personal honor—it is a call to action. It reaffirms my commitment to ensure that every member of the Hispanic community knows their rights and understands that neither language nor immigration status should ever be barriers to seeking help. Georgia has critical resources and organizations ready to support them, and our role is to connect them with those lifelines.”

The Responsible Coverage Award honors journalists and media outlets that demonstrate leadership in accurately and sensitively reporting on issues related to family violence, while furthering the goal of ending intimate partner violence in Georgia. Freddy Hernández’s work with HispAtlanta exemplifies the importance of culturally relevant media in advancing survivor safety, community awareness, and social change.
