Murder-suicide is a devastating and complex phenomenon that leaves deep scars on families, communities, and systems of justice. In this thought-provoking training, participants will explore the unsettling concept of the Perversion of Justice—a framework created by Dr. Thomas Joiner, that reveals how perpetrators may view their violent acts as morally justified, drawing upon distorted interpretations of virtues like justice, duty, mercy, and even glory.

Through an interdisciplinary lens, this session will examine how murder-suicide is often rooted in intimate partner violence, how suicidality may evolve in the perpetrator's psychological process, and why murder-suicide is not as rare as it seems.

The session will also address how community-based responses can better meet the needs of those left behind and what you can do to help. Special attention will be paid to trauma-responsive postvention strategies and Georgia-specific resources for survivors.
