For many individuals in abuse intervention programs, the role of "parent" is their most cherished identity and their greatest area of denial. Traditional intervention models frequently treat partner abuse and parenting as separate issues, yet we know that the tactics used to control a partner are the same tactics that harm children and destabilize the home. This workshop challenges facilitators to lean into the work of bridging this gap. We will explore how to use a participant's desire to be a "good parent" as a strategic lever for accountability. By centering the experiences of children and the non-abusive parent, facilitators can move beyond compliance-based learning toward authentic, long-term behavior change. We aren't teaching them how to be "better dads"; we are teaching them that the first step to being a good father is becoming a safe and respectful man. 

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

1. Articulate the specific ways that coercive control and domestic violence directly undermine child development, even when the child is not the primary target of physical abuse. 

2. Learn techniques to challenge the cognitive dissonance of participants who believe their domestic violence does not impact their parenting. 

3. Demonstrate techniques to use a participant’s motivation as a parent to break through the common barriers of minimization and denial. 

4. Identify strategies to help participants recognize how their behavior has intentionally or unintentionally sabotaged the other parent’s authority and bond with the children.
