Why does someone stay in an abusive relationship? Why might a survivor return to an abusive partner, recant a statement, or choose not to participate in prosecution? The answers are rarely simple—and often involve impossible choices shaped by fear, coercive control, financial dependence, children, housing, isolation, and system involvement. This two-hour, interactive training provides participants with a foundational understanding of domestic violence before placing them directly into the complex realities survivors face. The session begins with an overview of domestic violence, including the dynamics of power and control, coercive control, lethality indicators, and the complex factors that influence survivor decision-making. Participants will then engage in In Their Shoes: What Would You Choose?, an immersive, scenario-based activity that places them in the lives of individuals experiencing domestic violence. As they navigate realistic situations and make difficult decisions, participants will experience firsthand how limited options, systemic barriers, and safety concerns can shape survivor choices.
Lunch will be provided promptly at 11:00 AM and the interactive exercise and training content begins at 11:30.
Participants who are present from 11:30 - 1:30 will be eligible for 2 POST, FVIP, and Advocate credit hours.
