Program Description: The Child Welfare Training Collaborative (CWTC) is a partnership between the Georgia State University Professional Excellence Program and the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services. Our goal is to promote collaboration and a common understanding of issues affecting children and families through our professional development opportunities.

Course Description: This course will provide participants with foundational knowledge about child trauma and child traumatic stress. Participants will learn how trauma affects children including the impact on child development. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Explain the term "child traumatic stress"
  • Describe the types of experiences that constitute childhood trauma
  • Recognize role in responding to child traumatic stress
  • Explain the relationship between a child's lifetime trauma history and his or her behaviors and responses.
  • Describe how traumatic experiences affect brain development
  • Identify the impact of trauma on child development

The workshop is open to all community members who work with children and families, including law enforcement, schools, foster parents, faith based organizations, mental health providers, child care agencies, juvenile courts, community service organizations, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Division staff and many others.  

This course has been approved for 3 Continuing Education hours for FVIP Facilitators.
