JEKYLL ISLAND -  The Georgia Commission on Family Violence (GCFV) celebrates journalists and media outlets who cover the issue of domestic violence in a way that furthers the goal of ending violence against women in our state. Responsible Coverage Award recipients are leaders in their field whose reporting leads to greater public understanding of violence against women and the myraid ways in which the community can play a role in ending it.

This year, GCFV recognized two recipients of this award: Mikhaela Singleton (WRBL News 3 Columbus) and CBS46 News.

“The Commission is proud to honor Mikhaela Singleton and CBS46 News for their considerable effort and time reporting on the issue of domestic violence in a way that is respectful of victims and non-judgmental, educates the community, and raises awareness about the seriousness and breadth of the problem,” said Jennifer Thomas, Executive Director of GCFV.

Mikhaela Singleton responded to being honored with this award by saying, “I was shocked and humbled to learn I had won this honor. I am happy to know my passion for my work could help to honor the lives of two young people taken from this world too early. I take this affirmation as motivation to continue shedding light on the tough issues plaguing our society and to also raise the voices of those good souls willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.”

The Commission’s twenty-fourth annual family violence conference was held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center on September 9-12, 2017. The theme of this year’s conference was Beyond the Bruising: Unraveling the Complexities of Domestic Violence. Over 650 local and national community stakeholders attended, including judges, prosecutors, law enforcement, advocates, survivors, faith leaders, counselors and community members.
