SUMMARY:Understanding the Intersection of Family Violence and Substance Use
  Disorder
DESCRIPTION:While substance abuse does not cause family violence\, there is
a statistical correlation between the two issues.  Studies of family vi
olence frequently indicate high rates of alcohol and other drug use by per
petrators during abuse.    The association between alcohol use and dom
estic violence has been well established by past research\, and there is g
rowing evidence that drug use is associated with domestic violence. The c
learest evidence is that alcohol is a risk factor for family violence offe
nding.  Although the etiology is complex\, males who assault their inti
mate partners have frequently been drinking prior to the violence\, and t
hese men often have alcohol problems. There is also some evidence that al
cohol and drug use are implicated in family violence victimization\,althou
gh the nature of this relationship is multidimensional and may be more co
mplex than the substance use-domestic violence offending relationship.\n\
nThis workshop will provide information on understanding and addressing bo
th of these modalities into a family violence intervention program.  Als
o\, it will provide information to those who work with addictive disorders
clients who are perpetrators on how to increase safety for victims.\n\n\n
